Wooden furniture is natural and versatile

Wood is currently enjoying renewed interest in restaurant interior design. Wooden furniture and built-in wooden structures combine qualities such as naturalness, tradition and an impression of quality. Wood also makes it possible to create a wide variety of concepts, whether modern and minimalist or traditional and rustic. The interior design experts at GO IN explain where the fascination with wood comes from and what to look out for.

Wood has always been used as fuel, as a raw material and as a building material. This natural material was long the first choice for making furniture - until other materials such as plastic and metal, or cheaper laminates, took over because of industrial mass production. But in the spirit of ?back to the woods?, solid wood furniture and high-end combinations of wood and cushions are once again increasingly sought after – not only in the private sphere, but also for furniture and interior design concepts in restaurants and hotels. ?The popularity of wood is certainly due to a certain nostalgia for nature in our hectic times. Given that we now spend 90 % of our time indoors, this desire for more nature is understandable. Like plants, wooden furniture brings a piece of nature into interiors,? explain the interior design experts at GO IN.

Wood - a material for well-being

As a natural material, wood has a warm feel and a pleasant touch. ?Natural materials such as wood are more pleasant and warm and give a feeling of well-being. Moreover, wooden furniture from responsible sources is significantly more sustainable than plastic furniture, for example.? Solid wood tables and chairs are particularly durable and are embellished rather than damaged by the small signs of wear that appear over time or by the imperfections they have. As for the type of interior design, wood is by no means reserved for traditional inns. ?Wooden furniture can in fact be very modern and even minimalist. In interiors designed in the Scandinavian style, for example, light woods are mainly found. Combined with white or pastel colors, this interior design style is very modern and clean.?

Paying attention to combinations

Nevertheless, not all woods are equal, so certain things must be taken into account when combining furniture and built-in structures. According to the interior design experts at GO IN, it is perfectly possible to mix different types of wood if certain rules are followed so that rooms do not look messy. ?To be on the safe side, it is best to choose a single type of wood or to combine woods of similar color and structure.? If you want to use different types of wood in a room, caution is called for. ?You must make sure that the woods are very different, for example by choosing dark furniture to contrast with a light floor covering or vice versa. ?Separating the types of wood with a rug, for example, makes this kind of combination easier.? You must also pay attention to the color palette of the wood, as some tend towards yellow, like maple, while others are rather reddish, like cherry. ?This combination easily looks messy and should be avoided,? explain the interior design experts.

Rustic or pure? – comparing 2 interior design concepts

1. Rustic chic with Italian charm: the Ristorante Pizzeria Centrale in Friedrichshafen is almost entirely furnished with wood - from the dark shabby-look floor covering to the light wooden counter with visible knots and structures, including the light table tops and dark chairs (walnut-stained). Different types (rubberwood, beech, oak) and colors of wood were combined and paired with upholstered leather-look banquettes, chairs and stools and raw steel table bases. The mix of materials, the light/dark contrasts of the wooden elements and the combination of brown and cognac tones with a bright turquoise (cushions, wall color, decorative accessories) create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. 2. Scandinavian purism with a Bavarian touch: the Schwarze Kiste im Mohrenkönig in the Anton district of Augsburg is a modern tavern within a long Bavarian tradition. Here too, wood is omnipresent - from the floor to the light grey paneling, including the backlit banquette running around the room, the counter and furniture such as tables, chairs and stools. Natural oak (oiled and treated with a clear varnish) and a minimalist design combine Scandinavian purism with the warmth of Bavarian interiors. Matte black steel table bases and the dark floor covering in the tavern's main room contrast pleasantly with the light colors that dominate the interior. The lime-green walls and framed fruit pictures complete the fresh and welcoming atmosphere of the establishment. Furniture from GO IN: Kerst table base, Basu stool, Rainer chair.
