Heartfelt® Multipanel, a playful, warm and versatile acoustic ceiling

Keen to create spaces that combine comfort, practicality and aesthetics, designers and architects are paying increasing attention to the ?fifth wall? that the ceiling represents. By playing with different shapes and materials, they create unique ceilings. With the HeartFelt® felt range, Hunter Douglas Architectural has made a significant contribution. And this year, the manufacturer is expanding its range with three new baffle models that stand out for their dimensions, for a new concept: HeartFelt® Multipanel.

HeartFelt® Multipanel: new dimensions, a new concept, more possibilities

Hunter Douglas Architectural is introducing the new Heartfelt® Multipanel concept: the combination of Heartfelt® baffles of different dimensions on a single support. To achieve this, the manufacturer has designed three new baffles, which can be combined with each other and with an existing HeartFelt® baffle, using one and the same support. In terms of dimensions, the new baffles measure 80 x 35, 130 x 35 and 180 x 35 mm respectively (W x H). The linear Heartfelt® baffle with which they can be combined is 30 mm wide and 60 mm high. With the new Heartfelt® Multipanel concept, Hunter Douglas Architectural thus adds a further way to play with dimensions: whereas the linear Heartfelt® offering allows you to play with different baffle heights, the Heartfelt® Multipanel offering, which has its own carrier system for combining the new baffles, makes it possible to play mainly with widths.

Why these dimensions? Pieter Van Rees, Business Development Manager at Hunter Douglas Architectural, explains: ?The first dimension - 30 x 60 - was created to meet the Combi-Line concept. By adding three different sizes, you also add many possibilities. For the same surface area, it is possible in particular to install fewer baffles with Heartfelt® Multipanel thanks to the larger widths; so fewer lines are created.? Moreover, as the baffles are available in five shades, from white to black, it is easy to create new patterns that add an extra dimension to the interior ceiling and combine originality with aesthetic quality. Pieter van Rees does not rule out the possibility of offering other shades: ?It would be interesting to consider adding new colours in the future. For example, earthy tones. That would only improve things in terms of variety and combination possibilities.?

?The interior ceiling can be seen again?

For the manufacturer, this new concept, like the many developments of its ceiling ranges over recent years, responds to a trend that has been emerging in architecture for some time. Architects and designers are allowing themselves to play with the ceiling, which is gaining recognition as an architectural element in its own right. Pieter van Rees, who was closely involved in the development of Heartfelt® Multipanel, adds: ?For a long time, the interior ceiling was not very interesting: it above all had to be functional. Architects hardly paid any attention to the aesthetics of this element of the space. Fortunately, that is now a thing of the past. Nowadays, we increasingly see a ceiling receiving the attention it deserves: both functionally and aesthetically. A lot of variation and experimentation is possible. More and more different shapes, colours or materials are being used, which makes a ceiling much more interesting.?

With the Heartfelt® Multipanel range, Hunter Douglas therefore intends to respond to this growing trend, which more and more designers are embracing: ?The ceiling can be seen again. And we are meeting this need and the related requirements with these new baffles.?

The calm and warmth of an acoustic felt ceiling

For Hunter Douglas Architectural, the ceiling is finally getting the interest it deserves. Even so, it is very rare to use bright colours on an interior ceiling: ?Today's requirements mean that the interior ceiling must continue to radiate tranquillity and not draw all the attention to itself,? explains Pieter van Rees. In his view, the Heartfelt® Multipanel range meets these requirements perfectly thanks to its thermoformed nonwoven polyester fibre felt: ?The advantage of a felt ceiling is that it looks warm, almost soft. Light is reflected into the room in a pleasant way, different from when other materials are used; it is slightly diffuse. This gives a completely different look from that obtained with a metal ceiling, for example.?

Furthermore, felt's excellent acoustic properties make it an excellent material for interior ceilings, explains Pieter Van Rees. ?By default, felt is a material that absorbs sound excellently. High-pitched sounds, in particular, are better filtered, which simply gives a different kind of sound. This sound absorption also promotes calm and is experienced as pleasant by many people.?

One concept for universal application

According to Pieter Van Rees, the combination of a warm look and excellent acoustic properties makes Heartfelt® Multipanel a line that can be used universally: ?From office environments to shopping centres and swimming pools: a felt ceiling can be used anywhere. Its acoustic properties make it an ideal solution for interior spaces where many people gather. But in the office too - which is not necessarily a noisy environment - it can be very pleasant to enjoy the aesthetics and acoustics that felt offers. Heartfelt® Multipanel can be installed wherever a particularly attractive interior ceiling is desired.?

Another advantage: like all Heartfelt® products, the new Heartfelt® Multipanel baffles are 100% recyclable and Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Bronze. A plus for clients and project managers looking for solutions that meet environmental standards.

In 5 years, the HeartFelt® range has seen many developments. The latest, Heartfelt® Multipanel, offers an additional solution for creating original, attractive linear ceilings with undeniably high-performing characteristics in terms of sustainability and acoustics. These various properties of the Heartfelt® Multipanel line allow it to enhance any type of building, whether offices, shopping centres, educational establishments, etc.
