Eklo Lille hotel recognized for its low environmental impact

After Bordeaux, it is now Eklo Lille's turn to receive an A rating on the environmental label assessed by Betterfly Tourism. This rating illustrates the eco-responsible approach of the group, for which budget and eco-friendly hospitality go hand in hand!

What is environmental labelling?
The environmental labelling scheme is an official initiative, led by the Ministry of Ecological and Solidary Transition and launched as part of the Grenelle Environment Forum. It consists of measuring and communicating to consumers quantified information on the environmental impacts of a product and a service. This rating system is already well known to the general public, as it is used for household appliances and in the automotive sector.

Eklo is one of the hotel establishments that volunteered to assess and communicate to their guests the environmental footprint of a night spent at the hotel. This footprint is calculated using software developed by Betterfly Tourism.

In practical terms, the hotel is given a rating from A to E (A being the best) based on four environmental indicators:
- impact on the climate;
- water consumption;
- consumption of non-renewable resources (energy);
- the share of organic or eco-labelled products in the hotel's supplies.

The calculation of the environmental footprint of a night at the hotel takes into account all the life-cycle stages of each piece of hotel equipment, the food products for breakfast, and the hygiene and cleaning products used for one night.

Eklo Lille, an eco-friendly and budget hotel.
In 2019, Eklo implemented an action plan to reduce its environmental impact in Lille even further and obtain the A rating:
- Individual welcome products have been replaced by a large-format organic shower gel, Ecocert-labelled, in all rooms
- The Enzypin cleaning products used are organic and eco-labelled,
- Jams and chocolate spread are organic and served in jars. Individual packaging and plastic are banned,
- Breakfast cereals are organic.

These actions complement numerous others put in place from the construction of the hotel in 2017.

Ecology rooted in the group's DNA
The ecological approach is at the heart of Eklo's values. Each time it opens in a new city, the group carries out an in-depth review of its environmental impact. Being a player in eco-responsible hospitality commits Eklo to a virtuous approach, with the goal of making progress every day.

Like all the group's hotels, Eklo Lille is eco-responsible from its construction through to its operation. The group called on the architecture firm Patriarche for the construction of this low-energy building (BBC). Eklo uses French PEFC-certified wood, a material that is recyclable at the end of its life with low greenhouse gas emissions.

Eklo involves its guests in its environmental approach by promoting small everyday eco-friendly actions: soft mobility is encouraged with bike rental and charging stations for electric vehicles, washbasins and showers are fitted with aerators to reduce water consumption, electricity is switched off in unoccupied rooms, the dual-flow AHU ventilation system recovers heat, and sorting bins are available to guests and employees... As a result, Eklo consumes up to 3 times less electricity than a conventional hotel!

Local partners and short supply chains are favored on a daily basis. In addition, Eklo is committed to biodiversity with a CSR project that is ecological and friendly, in partnership with BeeCity, a specialist in urban beekeeping, for the management of the hives and the production of its own honey.
